It may be a long weekend, but not everything grinds to a halt when that happens. On Friday, Marvel dropped a trailer for its upcoming Marvel Legacy event:
In recent years, Marvel has been accused of pushing its legacy characters out to pasture and focusing on new iterations of the same characters – a new Thor, Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk, Hawkeye, Giant-Man, Wasp…. A lot of the original Marvel lineup from the 1960s have new versions.
I don’t believe that this is a bad thing at all, though. Miles Morales is a good Spider-Man with a similar but slightly different power set, but operates alongside Peter Parker. Kate Bishop is a fantastically 3-dimensional character within the Marvel U (well, depending on who is writing her) and is doing a great job as another Hawkeye. Each of the re-imagined characters have pros and cons.
The Marvel Legacy one-shot is setting out to do what DC Universe: Rebirth did last year, and I applaud them, no matter how late in the game they are doing it. They are listening to the fans. They are bringing back beloved characters that were shelved. And if this brings back the fans, then it brings back the sales too. And that is what Marvel seems to focus on more than anything, so let’s hope they get things right.
